Woman in the Clouds Encaustic Painting

$100.00

'Woman in the Clouds' is a beautifully moody and ethereal original abstract painting. The painting was created by applying melted beeswax mixed with natural earth pigment to a premium basswood panel. Then, intuitively following the flow and rhythm of the inks, a female figure emerged from the layers of inky indigo and greys.

A reminder me to be free - to follow where the wind and clouds take you. This painting is reminiscent of that feeling when a woman decides to shed who she has been or who the world pressured her to be and emerges as her true self.

  • 11 x 14 x 7/8 in

  • UV protected to prevent fading over time.

  • Ready to hang.

WHAT IS ENCAUSTIC?

Encaustic is an ancient artistic technique that can be seen in museums around the world today. Encaustic comes from the Greek word enkaustikos which means “to burn in” referring to the process of fusing with heat. The medium is melted and applied with a brush or a variety of other tools. Each layer is then reheated with a torch to fuse it to the previous layer…

It’s essentially painted with fire.

ENVIRONMENTAL MINDFULNESS

I’ve mindfully developed my process and business practices to cause the least amount of harm to the environment as possible.

I use sustainable and recycled shipping materials and occasionally create my own pigments from rocks and other natural materials. And since my work wouldn’t be possible without bees, I plant wildflowers, hang bee houses and financially support local beekeepers and organizations working to save the bees.

CARING FOR ENCAUSTIC ART

Encaustic paintings are archival, but as with any fine art, care should be given to them. Take care not to scratch or nick the surface or damage the edges. The wax will not melt unless exposed to temperatures over 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Leaving a painting in a car on a hot or freezing day would not be advisable nor hanging a painting in front of a window with direct sun.

Encaustic paintings bloom for up to 1-3 years as the wax continues to cure and harden. Wax bloom is a natural oxidation process, just like rust is the oxidation of iron. It appears as cloudy white dust over the painting. It is easily buffed out to reveal the original shine of the wax. You can buff the painting with a lint-free cloth or a nylon stocking. Take care not to press too hard as the wax can be damaged.

FRAMING

Your encaustic painting comes ready to hang and does not require framing. However, a floating frame is a beautiful option that can elevate a painting.

Framing under glass or acrylic is not recommended.
